Guy Delisle’s wife works for Doctors Without Borders. This very NGO link provides him with a relative behind the scenes access to each new country his family is relocated to, subsequently participating in the exceptional quality of his famous travelogues.

I picked the one on JERUSALEM first, as I visited Israel and spent some time in Jerusalem I was curious to read about someone else’s experience.

It didn’t disappoint. His brilliant account of his everyday observations are packed full with humour, history and facts. This book offers a light-hearted yet precious introduction to the political and religious tensions simmering underneath this not so easily shared Holy Ground.

La femme de Guy Delisle travaille pour Médecins Sans Frontières et c’est précisément ce lien avec une ONG qui lui donne un relatif accès à l’envers du décor de chacun des pays dans lesquels sa famille est transférée et qui participe par la suite à l’exceptionnelle qualité de ses célèbres carnets de voyage.

J’ai choisi de lire LES CHRONIQUES DE JÉRUSALEM en premier. Ayant voyagé en Israël et passé quelque temps à Jérusalem, j’étais curieuse de connaître ses impressions.

Je n’ai pas été déçue, ses brillantes observations quotidiennes sont remplies d’humour, d’informations historiques et de faits. Ce livre offre une introduction à la fois légère et précieuse aux tensions politiques et religieuses qui couvent sous cette Terre Sainte difficilement partagée.

I felt bereft when I reached the last sentences of WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING. Delia Owens is a master of observing wild as well human life. She knows how to let us into her world, at once with nature, rooting for Kya, leaving and breathing her wonders and struggles. She delivered such a stunning novel, I’m in awe. 🌊🦞🪶🌿

🇫🇷Je me suis sentie perdue, presque endeuillée lorsque j’ai atteint les dernières lignes de LÀ OÙ CHANTENT LES ÉCREVISSES. Delia Owens est maîtresse dans l’art d’observer la vie sauvage aussi bien qu’humaine. Elle sait partager son univers, en communion avec la nature, à soutenir Kya, à vivre avec elle ses émerveillements et ses luttes. Elle a donné naissance à un roman éblouissant, j’en suis admirative. 🌊🦞🪶🌿

ELEANOR OLIPHANT IS COMPLETELY FINE, she has a flat, a job, she’s good with routine, she drinks a couple of bottles of vodka every weekend...

It’s hard to believe it’s Gail Honeyman’s first novel. This book is so crafted! I would be moved, then I would find Eleanor exasperating and a few pages later, I could hardly stifle a laugh (I read in the public transports, so be warned if you’re like me, you’re in for a bumpy ride).

I don’t want any spoilers so I’ll just finish by saying this novel is an ode to friendship to be shared around without any restraint.

Ce roman est tellement bien écrit qu’il est difficile de croire qu’il s’agisse seulement du premier de Gail Honeyman. J’étais touchée, puis je trouvais Eleanor exaspérante et quelques page plus loin j’avais du mal à me retenir de rire (je lis dans les transports en communs, donc si vous êtes comme moi, soyez prévenus, quelques turbulences sont à prévoir).

Je ne veux pas gâcher l’histoire en révélant trop, je finirai juste en disant que ce livre est une ode à l’amitié à partager sans limite.

THE TATTOOIST OF AUSCHWITZ is a harrowing true story of survival which is akin to the one of a flower in search of the sun, piercing through the asphalt against all odds.

Even though I wasn’t a fan of the author’s writing style, I couldn’t put this book down because I simply couldn’t bear abandoning Lale to this god forsaken place. I admired his wits and his ability to find nuggets of surviving humanity -to the point of finding love- even when stifled in a hopeless world.

THE TATTOOIST OF AUSCHWITZ educates on the Holocaust without destroying hope, it’s preserving memory without letting trauma get the lion’s share. This is an essential read.

LE TATOUEUR D’AUSCHWITZ est le récit d’une histoire vraie bouleversante. Celle de Lale, survivant, Tätowierer à Auschwitz, dont le parcours fait penser à celui d’une fleur qui, contre toute attente, réussit pousser à travers l’asphalte.

Malgré la qualité d’écriture*qui, à mon sens, laisse à désirer, je n’ai pu lâcher ce livre, j’aurais eu l’impression d’abandonner Lale au milieu de l’enfer. J’ai admiré son esprit vif et sa capacité à dénicher des pépites d’humanité, jusqu’à trouver l’amour, même au plus profond de l’horreur.

Ce livre enseigne sur l’holocauste mais ce n’est pas dénué d’espoir, il prend le parti de la mémoire sans pour autant laisser toute la place au trauma. Ce témoignage est essentiel.

🇺🇸🏳️‍🌈Okay, this isn’t a picture of the book, these are bills on the wall of the @youngvictheatre from the musical FUN HOME.

I must say in that regard that I’m rather “protective” of the books I loved when it comes to stage or screen adaptations but it doesn’t apply there, its essence was uncannily captured by @TesoriandkronLisa as the Tony Awards they won would confirm.

FUN HOME revolves around Alison Bechdel’s relationship with her father.

She grew up in a home divided in two parts: a funeral parlour on one side -“fun” home - and the other side reserved for antiques and as a second thought… family. Each of its member is fond of arts, culture and knowledge -she shares with her father a love of books- but emotions aren’t their forte. At the center of the household lies a massive secret and as always when children are involved you just have to sit and wait for them to manifest the said secret through every fiber of their being.

To say I loved it is an understatement.

Je dois dire à ce propos que je suis assez “protectrice” des livres que j’aime lorsqu’ils sont adaptés pour la scène où les écrans mais là, c’est différent, son essence a été remarquablement saisie par @tesoriandkon comme le confirment les Tony Awards qui les ont récompensées.

FUN HOME évolue autour de la relation entre Alison Bechdel et son père.

Elle a grandi dans une maison divisée en deux: d’un côté un funérarium (“fun” home), de l’autre, un espace dédié aux antiquités et, accessoirement, à la famille. Chacun de ses membres est passionné de culture, d’art et de connaissances - elle partage avec son père un amour pour les livres- en revanche, les émotions ne sont pas leur fort. Au centre du foyer repose un énorme secret et comme toujours avec les enfants, il suffit de s’asseoir dans un coin et d’attendre pour voir ce même secret s’exprimer à travers chaque cellule de leur être.

Dire que j’ai adoré est un euphémisme.

Growing up in South Africa meant he could never really fit anywhere, every turn potentially fraught with danger. What he couldn’t realize at the time though, was the richness and the variety of experiences such a particular status associated with his wits and a heroic mother would eventually convey.

His empathy, sharp observations, humour filled remarks and fast paced writing are the best way to confront harsh realities and share the vast knowledge he accumulated during his formative years.

I read this extraordinary memoir compulsively. It definitely should be mandatory reading at schools all around the globe.

🇫🇷🇿🇦 Trevor Noah est né illégal en tant que fruit d’un couple mixte sous l’apartheid -TROP NOIR, TROP BLANC: UNE ENFANCE SUD AFRICAINE DANS LA PEAU D’UN MÉTIS. Grandir en Afrique du Sud, signifiait qu’il n’était vraiment à sa place nulle part, chaque étape comportant un fort potentiel de danger. Ce qu’il ne pouvait réaliser à l’époque, en revanche, était la richesse et la variété des expériences que ce statut bien particulier associé à son intelligence vive et à une mère héroïque allait finir par pourvoir.

Son empathie, ses fines observations, ses remarques emplies d’humour tout autant que son récit enlevé sont les meilleures façons de confronter de dures réalités et de partager les vastes connaissances qu’il a accumulées tout au long de sa croissance.

J’ai lu de manière compulsive cette extraordinaire autobiographie. Elle devrait définitivement figurer dans la liste des lectures imposées des écoles, où qu’elles se trouvent dans le monde.
